Templating, Cutting & Installation

Sirona, 200th Anniversary Mosaic

London Zoo

Marking international conservation charity ZSL’s 200th anniversary at its historic London Zoo, artist Linder Sterling created Sirona: a 16-metre mosaic of the endangered Ethiopian mountain adder, built from around a million reclaimed marble tesserae and honouring Joan Procter, the zoo's first female curator of reptiles. We templated, cut, stained and sealed the star galaxy granite surround that frames the piece, then installed it on site in a new space for visitors to gather opposite Tiny Giants.

Framing Sirona

Templates were taken directly from the space at London Zoo, capturing the exact dimensions and angles the granite needed to fill.

Back in the workshop, the granite was cut to match each template exactly, ready to frame the mosaic without a gap.

Each piece was stained and sealed before leaving the workshop, protecting the granite ahead of installation and years of outdoor exposure.

Installed On Site.

The finished granite surround was fitted into place at the zoo, framing Sirona in the space designed for visitors to stop and take it in.
